Meet the Coach

Max Maylor is a former NCAA Division I wrestler and former NCAA Division 1 wrestling coach with a strong background in both athletic and academic achievement. In 2024–2025, he served as an assistant coach at Appalachian State University, helping lead the team to the Southern Conference Championship and coaching three NCAA qualifiers.

A native of Highland, Wisconsin, Maylor was a Wisconsin state champion at 160 pounds in 2018 and a three-time state placewinner, finishing third as a junior and sixth as a freshman. He compiled an outstanding 174-23 high school career record and was a three-time conference champion, establishing himself early as a top competitor.

Maylor began his collegiate career at the University of Michigan (2018–2023), competing primarily in the 174-pound weight class. In the 2022–23 season, he posted a career-best 15 wins, including a 5-5 dual meet record and a 4-3 mark in Big Ten competition.

He transferred to the University of Wisconsin for his graduate year, continuing to compete at 174 pounds with three dual meet appearances at 184. In his final season (2023–24), Maylor compiled a 19-9 record, earning recognition as a 2024 NCAA Qualifier, Big Ten All-American, and NCAA Scholar All-American. He was also honored as a 2024 At-Large Academic All-District honoree. Maylor was ranked as high as No. 11 in the country at 174 pounds for much of the season. He placed seventh at the Big Ten Championships, securing an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament, where he won one match as the No. 17 seed.

In June 2024, Maylor began his coaching career at Appalachian State University, bringing elite-level experience, tactical expertise, and a student-athlete mindset to the program. His impact was immediate—he helped guide the Mountaineers to the 2024–2025 SoCon title and mentored three NCAA Championship qualifiers in his first season.

Max Maylor’s journey from a decorated high school athlete to a Big Ten standout and now a Division I coach reflects his commitment to excellence, leadership, and the continued growth of collegiate wrestling.
